Schubert composed this popular song in 1825 during a holiday in Upper Austria. He originally wrote the music for an excerpt from a poem by Sir Walter Scott, and called his piece Ellens dritter Gesang (Ellen’s third song).

We build the musical box (a hand-powered instrument, capable of playing a short tune) in a wooden case decorated with motifs cut out with a fretsaw.
Due to the technical characteristics of the instrument, a slight metal noise is heard as it plays (metal comb teeth are plucked by metal pins while rotating the cylinder with the ratchet lever, which inevitably produces some noise). Unlike digital instruments, a mechanical musical box can never offer a clear, noise-free audio experience.
